Q. What is glycolic acid?
A. It is the active ingredient in Desert Bloom products and is a by-product of the sugar cane industry. It is one of a family of so-called alpha-hydroxy acids. Most affect the skin beneficially, but research has shown glycolic acid to be one of the most beneficial.
Q. What does it do?
A. It does four things:
- Scientific studies show glycolic acid helps reduce fine-line and coarse wrinkles by stimulating production of collagen and elastin (the two most important skin proteins). These are destroyed by the UV rays of the sun.
- It removes (exfoliates) the top dead layer of skin, including actinic keratoses which, under certain conditions, can develop into certain types of skin cancers. Also, fresh young skin cells come to the surface, giving the skin an almost immediate youthful glow.
- It helps to fade skin blemishes such as those caused by pregnancy, birth control pills, and age spots.
- Acne is a problem for many individuals, and dermatologists often use it in treating both their teen-age and adult patients.
Q. How does it differ form Retin-A?
A. It does most of the same things as Retin-A, but without any of the side-effects. Glycolic acid products do not require a prescription and are much less expensive.
Q. Is it safe?
A. Absolutely! The FDA has ruled that it is perfectly safe to use up to 10% on the face and the 12% lotion can be used on the feet, legs, arms, and back. Over-use may cause some minor skin irritations that are easily reversed by discontinuing application for a few days.
Q. Is it expensive?
A. Products containing glycolic acid are relatively inexpensive because so little is used with each application. When properly used (sparingly), a 2 oZ. jar of Desert Bloom Natural Skin Renewal Cream will last 4 to 5 months, and you will see amazing results!
Q. Can I use my regular cosmetics with Desert Bloom products?
A. Yes. Simply apply the Desert Bloom product first, followed by your other makeup as you normally use it.
Q. How often do I use it?
A. To begin .with all glycolic acid products should be used sparingly and only once a day, either in the morning or evening, until your skin becomes adjusted (which usually takes 2-3 weeks). If desired, applications may be increased to twice a day, morning and evening, for faster results.
Q. Does it sensitize my skin to the sun?
A. No. However, because glycolic acid exfoliates the top dead layer of skin making your skin more susceptible to sunburn, we recommend you use our moisturizer with sunscreen and micronized zinc oxide. The sunscreen protects against the UVB which causes sunburn, and the titanium dioxide or zinc oxide protects against UVA which causes the deeper damage to the underlying layers of the skin.

A. No. All Desert Bloom products are manufactured using a special blend of natural ingredients in an advanced moisturizing base that contains no petroleum-based products.
